BUSINESS OF THE MONTH - February 2010
BUSINESS OF THE MONTH - January 2010 Founded is 1915, Citrus College is the oldest community college in Los Angeles County and the fifth oldest in California. The public community college, which has a current enrollment of over 13,000 students, serves the cities of Azusa, Claremont, Duarte, Glendora, and Monrovia; as well as portions of Arcadia, Bradbury, Irwindale, La Verne, Pomona, and San Dimas. Citrus College’s mission, vision and values center on access to “high quality instruction that empowers students to compete globally and to contribute to the economic growth of today’s society.” As such, the college offers associate degrees in 31 areas; certificates of achievement in 46 areas; and 13 skill awards. Citrus College’s involvement in the community focuses on providing opportunities for student learning and success, and acting as a good neighbor. Through Service Learning, students volunteer at local non-profit agencies as part of their coursework. Cosmetology Program students frequently donate their time and services to community projects such as the Foothill Unity Center’s Back-to-School event, for which the college received Foothill Unity’s Golden Plate Award in 2007. The college has supported the annual auction benefitting the Irwindale Educational Foundation and participated as a judge for the Young Citizen of the Year competition. In addition, Citrus received the Irwindale Chamber of Commerce Environmental Award for Waste Reduction in 2008. Citrus College’s students, faculty and staff have also been actively involved in local and state initiatives such as the Gold Line Foothill Extension and other causes that promote access to education for all.
BUSINESS OF THE MONTH - December 2009 Edison’s Customer Technology Application Center (CTAC) is a Southern California Edison Energy Center known for providing energy solutions and education on energy efficiency and demand response since 1990. Located in the City of Irwindale, CTAC has 51,000 square feet of testing and demonstration centers, classrooms, working displays, latest technologies and computer labs for customers to see, touch and learn about the latest in efficient technologiesIn 2008 they won the Building of the Year from the Building Owners & Managers Association (BOMA). Edison CTAC was recently recognized as “Business of the Year” by the Upper San Gabriel Valley Municipal Water District. They are the defacto standard in Energy Centers worldwide. Edison CTAC provides internships for local college students. They provide Education Tours for local schools and support National Engineering Week for high school studentsThey have provided between 100 to 200 turkey each year for the past several years for the Pasadena Mission Inn homeless shelter. CTAC and its employees have conducted toy drives for Toys for Tots, Hosted blood drives for the American Red Cross and raised money for the United Negro College Fund. SCE’s Business Customer Division Employees Contributions fundraisers and College Bound. Through a company program called Energy in Action, employees donated 230,000 hours to organization of their choice, including churches, women’s shelters, food banks, youth activities and schools.SCE/CTAC is a Cornerstone Club member at the Bronze level providing classes, seminars and workshops as advertised in the chamber newsletter, as well as meeting facilities for many Chamber Events.
Business Award Nomination Form2010 Business AwardsJoe DiShanni Business of the Year: Hanson Aggregates This year Hanson Aggregates celebrates 100 years in business. They have received Awards for Outstanding Achievement in projects such as the Nokia Building, Staples Center and the Honda Center. One way Hanson Aggregates gives back to the Community is by giving school tours of their plants in Irwindale, Rancho Cucamonga or Corona. They are longtime supporters of the Irwindale Chamber as evidenced by past service on the board of directors, Cornerstone Club Charter membership and being a 30 year member. For these reasons and more Hanson Aggregates was selected as our 2010 Joe DiShanni Business of the YearEmployee of the Year: Priscilla Zepeda, City of Irwindale Priscilla Zepeda is the Parks and Recreation Supervisor for the City of Irwindale. Priscilla is responsible many programs within the recreation department including Youth Sports, Tiny Tots, Teen Club, Kids-Zone, After –School Program and more. Consistently dependable and thorough she makes it all seem effortless and as stated by the person who nominated her “adds new meaning the phrase ‘Above and Beyond’ “. Priscilla has always leaned towards the encouragement and support of youth. She actively serves on the committee for the Chamber’s Young Citizen of the Year program and is on the Irwindale Educational Foundation Board of Directors. Business Person of the Year: Marissa Buckisch, Picasso’s Café, Bakery & Catering Marissa is the First Vice President of Picasso’s Café Bakery and Catering Company as well as a partner in the corporation. Her responsibilities include overseeing all marketing, sales, special events, corporate accounts and general daily operations. Marissa is very involved in the local community and holds many volunteer leadership positions including on the Chamber board of directors. She is a member of many industry associations including the American Association of Senior Executives, California Restaurant Association and National Association of Catering Executives. Marissa was selected as the 2007 recipient of the San Gabriel Valley Chapter YWCA Women of Achievement Award in the Business Category. Marissa along with the entire Picasso’s team are actively involved in the City of Hope Walk for Hope, Assemblyman Hernandez’s Thanksgiving Food Distribution and many other great community activities including the Chamber’s Feast at the Faire and World of Food Poker Tour. Ambassador of the Year: Brenda Reuter, Athens Services What can possibly be said about a person with a heart of gold? Brenda has provided immeasurable contributions to the Chamber as an Ambassador. She promotes the Chamber every chance she get, is always willing to lend a helping hand and is at nearly every event. She has helped us to lug boxes, set up, tear down for events and then greet everyone in attendance with a cheerful hello and a bounce in her step. Brenda will be instrumental in our continuing to lead the way for others as this year’s Chair of the Business Ambassadors. On behalf of the Irwindale Chamber of Commerce it is our pleasure to recognize Brenda Reuter as Ambassador of the Year. Citizen of the Year Award: Art Tapia Art Tapia is a lifetime resident of Irwindale and an active member of the community. Art served on the Ad Hoc City Budget Committee in 2009 ; on the City’s 50th Anniversary Committee taking active part in the commemorative coin design and distribution; and has just reappointed to a 3rd term on the Planning Commission. Art assisted fellow veterans with the process for having their names inscribed on the City’s Veteran’s monument and was instrumental in having four WWII veterans honored on Veteran’s Day. On behalf of the Irwindale Chamber of Commerce it is our pleasure to recognize Art Tapia as the 2010 Citizen of the Year. |
