Several officers have received awards and recognition throughout the years for their dedicated service to their departments, community and the law enforcement field. Most recently, IPOA member Detective Manny Campos will be honored with the Award of Valor from the California Peace Officer Association in October. This award recognizes exceptional valor beyond the call of duty. Public Safety officers must have exhibited extraordinary courage, decisiveness and presence of mind, and unusual swiftness of action, regardless of his or her own personal safety in an attempt to save or protect human life. In addition, Detective Campos has been nominated to receive the Presidential Medal of Valor. This is the highest decoration for bravery exhibited by public safety officers in the United States.
IPOA hosts and participates in various community events and activities throughout the year that encourage community engagement such as National Night Out, Irwindale Residents vs. Irwindale Police Officers softball game, Denim Day (Awareness on Rape and Sexual Assault), Coffee with a Cop, and the Special Olympics Torch Run. IPOA is the sponsor for the Annual Irwindale Safe and Sane Fireworks Poster Contest for children in grades K-8th. In collaboration with the Irwindale Library and Recreation, this event was created to promote firework safety in the community.
IPOA’s most notable achievement is their involvement and active participation in the Pink Patch Project serving as the public awareness campaign’s headquarters. This innovative campaign was a collaborative effort between the Los Angeles County Police Chief’s Association and several public agencies in California designed to increase public awareness about breast cancer and to raise funds for the fight against the disease. Thanks to the initiative of the Irwindale Police Department, IPOA can be attributed for kick starting the campaign and drawing national attention with agencies across the country participating. Through their various fundraising efforts, IPOA was able to raise an excess of $20,000 for the City of Hope Research Hospital.
